Now we are Cooking!

Ham and Cheddar Supper Waffles
Cost per serving: 92 cents

Heat up the waffle iron to create a dinner the kiddie's will love. Ham and cheddar make it substantial; serve with a drizzle of maple syrup or top with tomato salsa. These freeze well, so make more than you need. 4 Servings I usually double or triple the recipe and throw the rest in the freezer!
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups milk
1 large egg, lightly beaten
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
2 ounces thinly sliced ham, chopped
1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar
Preparation
Heat waffle iron. Whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a large mixing bowl. Stir milk, egg and butter into flour mixture until just combined. Fold in ham and cheese.

Mist waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray. Pour about 3/4 cup batter onto iron and spread to edges with a spatula. Cook until waffles are golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Repeat with remaining batter, misting iron with cooking spray as needed. Serve immediately.

Homemade Bubbles

Make up a Batch of Bubbles at Home
Mix up your own bubble solution at home and see how big you can make them!
Combine the following:3 cups of water (distilled is best)1/3 cup corn syrup (Karo Light)

1 cup Joy (or Dawn) dishwashing liquidAfter mixing, let settle a bit before using.
Try this: Pour solution into a clean plastic lid or tray. Dip one end of a straw into the bubble solution to get it wet, then blow slowly through the other end into the bubble solution.
Look closely at the bubbles. Can you see a reflection? Can you see swirling colors?
Make up some bubble challenges: Can you make two bubbles stick to each other (a double-bubble)? Can you catch a bubble on your finger? Can you pop one with your tongue just for fun???

Beating the Back to School Rush

When I was a kid, I always wondered why my mother was such a GROUCH in the morning. “Never,” I swore, “will I get mad at MY kids in the morning! They’ll never get on the school bus crying!” Well, I’ve managed not to put them on the school bus crying, but some mornings there is definite grouchiness in the air. What is the key to pleasant mornings that start the day off on a good note and still get us all to school and work on time? Here are some tips to help us all have better mornings: Last year my boys were just in Pre-School and we would have morning fiasco's!

Prepare the night before
As part of our bedtime routine, everyone makes sure their backpacks are packed and ready to go with homework folders, library books to return, signed permission slips, and all the other stuff needed for school that day. We leave our backpacks on a hook by the door, but you could even put them in the car or van the night before.

Another part of preparing the night before is to lay out clothes for the next day. Some families even lay out clothes for the entire week on Sunday night. Teach your kids to let your know when they are running out of clean clothes – it’s much easier to deal with “I only have two pairs of clean socks left” than with “I am out of socks” – especially when it is 7:38 and you need to leave the house by 7:40.

As part of laying out clothes, make sure everyone’s shoes are by the door, on the shoe rack, or wherever shoes live in your house.

Give yourself extra time
A little quiet, peaceful time in the morning before you have to wake up the kids can start the day on a brighter note for you. Make a cup of tea, say a prayer, and think of all your blessings. Read some scripture and then go wake them up.

Meals on wheels
Bless the school cafeteria for providing meals every day for all those sweet children. Since Elijah is in afternoon kindergarten he and the other two and Mommy, however, have “home lunch.” However, if he were morning kindergarten I could imagine myself about two weeks at the beginning of each school year, being ultra-efficient and would make sandwiches the night before. That level of preparedness doesn’t last for me I always fizzle out, although I do recommend it as a great time-saver.

Breakfast is another issue. The prepared mom sets up the breakfast table the night before with bowls, spoons, and a choice of healthy cereals. Yes, I know steel-cut oats are the “breakfast du jour”, but those little packets of flavored instant oatmeal are fast, hot, and filling. Surely they’re a better choice than Trix? An apple a day keeps the Dr. away!!!! Other quick and easy breakfast options are yogurt and peanut butter toast. When time really gets short, a cheese stick or a banana in the van is better than nothing (just make sure your child takes the peel to the trash and doesn’t leave it on the floor of the van under the seat like in the Lloyd mobile :)

Institute a “No T.V.” policy
Or at least a “No T.V. until you are dressed and have eaten, brushed your teeth, and are ready to leave” policy. Put on some bouncy music if you need morning noise. T.V. just slows everyone down.

Make a chart
If you have a child who just can’t get the morning routine down, make a chart showing all the tasks that child needs to do. Use drawings for non-readers. A chart is especially helpful when you are trying to institute new routines and responsibilities: for example, when a child is first starting kindergarten (like Elijah)and needs help remembering what to do each morning.

Adjust to your child’s needs
Maybe your son likes ten minutes to lie in bed and stretch before starting the day. Wake him up ten minutes earlier so he can have this time. Or maybe your daughter just isn’t interested in breakfast foods in the morning – give her a peanut butter sandwich instead. Give everyone a better start to the day – including yourself – by adjusting to your children’s needs when possible.

Introducing your MOPS theme for 2009-2010

Our Theme Book

Yes that is right we are FAR OUT!!! We are going to Outer Space!!

The MOPS Experience equips women for the joys and challenges of their lives as moms. One key factor in the MOPS Experience is the relationships built within a group. Time and time again, MOPS moms share that the friends they make in MOPS are significant for this season of their life and on into their future. God created us for relationship! It’s one of the defining parts of being human.
However, when you become a mom, all your relationships change. It’s like you have landed on a different planet—Planet Mom—and the relationships on Planet Mom don’t look like the ones on your previous planet. Your relationship with yourself is different—you are a mom! Your relationship with your husband, girlfriends, extended family, community and God have all changed. Many of these changes are positive, some are not. Even positive change requires adjustments on your part.
During the 2009-10 MOPS year, we will explore how to thrive in relationships Together on Planet Mom.

The Theme Book
The theme book for 2009-10 is Life on Planet Mom: A Down to Earth Guide to Your Changing Relationships by Lisa T. Bergren. The book is part of the MOPS International Membership benefit.
The foundation of being Together on Planet Mom is that God is with us and we are created for relationship with him and each other. We are created to “do life” together. This is definitely true for us as both moms and leaders. The more we draw together in community, the better we are able to thrive as women and moms. And in MOPS leadership, we are better together than individually, which is why the emphasis in MOPS leadership is working together on a team.
This life together is underlined in our theme verse for the year, where Jesus promises: “For where two or three come together … there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

Better moms make a better world for Jesus!
What is MOPS?
MOPS stands for “Mothers of Preschoolers”; an international organization designed to meet the unique needs of mothers whose children are not yet school-aged. MOPS International exists to encourage, equip and develop every mother of preschoolers to realize her potential as a woman, mother and leader in the name of Jesus Christ. MOPS helps moms recognize that they have needs too and when they take the time to meet those needs they are more effective in meeting the needs of their families. For more information on MOPS International check out their website at http://www.mops.org/
What Will I Do at MOPS?
Our MOPS morning begins at 9:00 AM when the children, called MOPPETS, are checked into our Children’s Area. At 9:30 AM, MOPS begins with a delicious breakfast food and table talk. (Don’t worry if you are running late – you are always welcome!). Next is a time for moms to be inspired and challenged by our speakers, or Mentor mom Jan who will shepherd us and talk on a variety of topics designed to encourage moms to be the best they can be. Then, discussion groups have time to discuss together what they just heard, giving each mom a chance to share her thoughts and ideas, struggles and successes. The morning concludes with a social activity or craft time giving moms the chance to complete something special for her home or to be given as a gift.
Who Can Come?
All mothers of with children ages birth through kindergarten (including pregnant moms) are invited. You do not need to be a member of St. Marks Church to join us. This is a safe environment, for growth and encouragement in your walk in raising your children.
What About my Children?
Children ages 9 weeks through 5 years old can be enrolled in MOPPETS. Starting September 2009, we will also accept Homeschoolers. (Infants and nursing infants are always welcome to stay with mom.) During this time the children listen to a Bible Story, sing songs, have a snack, make a craft and have lots of fun.
When Is MOPS?
We meet on the Twice a month. MOPPETS child check-in begins at 9:00 AM and our MOPS meeting begins at 9:00 AM and ends at 11:15 AM. Please contact Angel Knackstedt at(636) 225-3347 email: aknackstedt@msn.com or Angie Garner at (636)587-3304 angiegalleano@hotmail.com
